“Vote-by-Mail” (Mail-In) Ballot — “Mail-In” Is Risky, But Only If Mailing “Late”
All California registered voters should receive a vote-by-mail ballot and a postage-paid ballot return envelope from their county elections official.
Any registered voter may vote using a vote-by-mail ballot instead of going to the polls on Election Day. The only issues with mail-in ballots are:
- Did you receive your ballot when you should have?
- Are you ready to mail your ballot in time for it to be counted?
The Back-Up Plan
California voters can also return their completed ballots in person to a secure drop box or drop-off location — or any polling place, vote center, or county elections office by 8:00 p.m. on Election Day — in case they choose not to mail their ballot, or worry mailing will cause their ballot to be LATE.
Vote-by-Mail Ballots Are Super Convenient, but Is There a Risk They Won’t Be Counted?
Yes, sometimes. Here’s why…
- Did you receive your ballot in the first place? If you haven’t received your ballot within 2-3 weeks of election day, call your local County Elections Office to find out why — and what you can do to get a replacement ballot. If it’s too late for a replacement, ask what your options are.
- Was mail delivery disrupted in some way? Famously, a batch of mail, with some ballots, was found “tossed in ravine”… This can affect you in either direction — coming or going!
- Does the Trump Administration’s new U.S. Post Office postmark rule — where they don’t have to postmark your mail the same day you drop it off — affect you? This rule IS in effect, and is how your ballot could be postmarked after the deadline (election day), or arrive too late to be counted (7 days after election day).
- Not as convenient, but if you want to mail your ballot, it is recommended you take it into a U.S. Post Office and have it “manually postmarked” by a U.S. Post Office employee at your earliest convenience.
- Even though your ballot may be “Manually Postmarked” by the deadline (election day), there is still a chance it will not count because it arrived too late (past 7 days after election day).
- Bigger still is Trump’s continuous efforts to interfere with state elections (via the SAVE Act, thankfully, not yet passed).
For these reasons, it is safer and more secure — and more fun! — to hand-deliver your ballot to a secure location, or to vote in person.
