A Major Setback for Democracy
The 1965 Voting Rights Act Has Been, Effectively, Overturned
On April 29, 2026, in Louisiana v. Callais, the United States Supreme Court ruled that “race-conscious” redistricting under Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 is unconstitutional. “Racial bias” can no longer be grounds for challenging unfair racial gerrymanders which will, “systematically dilute and weaken the voting power of racial minorities — so long as [state legislators] do it under the guise of ‘partisanship’ rather than explicit ‘racial bias.’” (President Barack Obama –The Guardian)
This is not a moment for panic. The concern is not so much for 2026, but in 2028 many more U.S. Congressional seats may be in play than would have been without this decision. But all of this remains to be seen. What is happening now is a clear indication of the types of issues we will need to address when our nation is back in the hands of the people, for the people, by the people.
Special Meeting April 30, 2026
Thursday, April 30, at 8 p.m. EST, the No Kings Coalition convened an emergency response call with leaders from the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, the ACLU, and plaintiffs from the case. They’ll break down:
- What the decision actually says;
- How it undermines voting rights in Louisiana and beyond;
- Concrete steps we can take next to protect our democracy.
More to follow after the meeting.
